LEARNER’S LAMENT
Written by Judy Ryall, 1975 (A club member for 40 years)
My brain is dim, I cannot see
A player of note I’ll never be.
That quick and easy repartee
Is still as clear as Greek to me!
If only some enlightening souls
Had warned me that I’m far too old,
I could have tried my skill at bowls
Or knitting mufflers for the cold.
Instead of which I’m stuck with this –
it isn’t my idea of bliss!
I wonder if I dare confess
On Monday at our weekly lesson
I can’t remember trumps – I’m dense!
At Contract Bridge, I’m void of sense.
The proper lead – the Queen finess –
I understand it less and less.
I’ll battle on, but please be kind.
I wouldn’t find it such a grind
if God had blessed me with a mind!
